Income

Louisiana median household, median family and per capita incomes all increased from 1979 to 1989 in current dollars. However, with inflation factored in, the median household, median family and per capita incomes in Louisiana declined during the period 1979 to 1989. Median household income in Louisiana in 1989 was $21,949. Adjusted for inflation, this represents a 14% decline from the 1979 level. Mean Household Income by Selected Types, Louisiana, 1979-1989 Inflation-adjusted median family income declined in Louisiana from 1979 to 1989 by about 13%. Inflation-adjusted per capita income declined slightly during this same period. Wage and salary, nonfarm self-employment, farm self-employment, social security and public assistance mean household incomes in Louisiana increased from 1979 to 1989 in current dollars. However, factoring in inflation, all categories except mean social security household incomes declined during the period 1979 to 1989. The greatest degree of decline in mean household income in Louisiana occurred in the nonfarm self-employment and farm self-employment types with inflation-adjusted declines of 29% and 25% respectively. Social security mean household inflation-adjusted income increased by 15% in Louisiana during the period 1979 to 1989. Per capita income in Louisiana, like the United States as a whole, is higher in the metropolitan areas. Inflation adjusted per capita income increased in 21 parishes and decreased in 43 parishes during the period 1979 to 1989.
