INSURANCE INFORMATION NOTICE 97-2
SUBJECT: INSPECTION OF RENTAL VEHICLES
There is a large number of State Agencies whose employees rent vehicles to perform or further the State's business. In most situations, the Office of Risk Management carries the liability and physical damage (collision and comprehensive) insurance on these vehicles. Prior to taking possession of the vehicle, the State employee should inspect the vehicle for any prior damage to the vehicle such as scratches, dents, windshield cracks or pecks, torn upholstery, etc. (both inside and outside of vehicle). These should be noted on the lease agreement. This same process should be completed with the leasing agent or company once the vehicle is returned. This practice will cut down on the State being held responsible for damages that we do not owe.
If you have any questions, please contact Walter Lockhart, State Risk Claims Supervisor at (504) 342-8466.
