INSURANCE INFORMATION NOTICE NO. 2003-3

SUBJECT:  DEADLINE FOR FILING FOR FEMA DISASTER FUNDS

There is a 30-day period in which State agencies can file an application for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  This application period begins when the disaster is declared.  At this point, it is too late to file for assistance for Tropical Storm Isidore.  However, Hurricane Lili was declared a major disaster on October 3, 2002.  It will very soon be too late to file for assistance for Hurricane Lili.

Only certain parishes are eligible for assistance, and a few of these parishes are only eligible for limited assistance with preparation expenses and debris removal expenses.  Most of the parishes will be eligible for assistance under all categories, A through G.

All agencies that suffered damage in these authorized parishes should submit an application to FEMA within the next few days even though the Office of Risk Management intends to cover buildings and contents items and automobile damages under the self-insurance program.

Attached is the Request for Public Assistance application.  You are encouraged to fax your completed application to FEMA at (225) 218-2874.  Ms. Sandy Morales is the FEMA contact responsible for handling State agency applications.  She can be reached through her cell phone at (202) 431-8612.  For more information, the FEMA website is www.FEMA.gov.

If you should have any questions, you can contact James Lea at (225) 342-8399 or Michael Kennedy at (225) 342-8436.
